  • The Saudi Petrochemical Company (Sadaf) The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia flared off much of its natural gas produced during the crude oil extraction process until the early 1980. However, the development of the US$12 billion Master Gas Gathering System (MGS), one of the largest engineering projects in the world, provided the foundation for the development of the Kingdom???s multi-billion dollar petrochemical industries. In 1976, the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) was created by the Saudi government. It is in-charge with constructing the Kingdom???s primary industrial base that will utilize the country???s abundant natural oil and gas resources. SABIC later entered into a negotiation with qualified international oil and gas companies, one of which was Pecten Arabian Company, an affiliate of the Shell Oil Company. On June 27, 1980 a Joint Venture Agreement was signed and established the Saudi Petrochemical Company, a limited liability company. Since then the new petrochemical enterprise is commonly known as, Sadaf, the Arabic word for seashells. The startup dates between 1984 and 1985 were all met on schedule. In October 1984, two months ahead of schedule, Sadaf, which is by now the largest petrochemical complex in the Middle East, produced Saudi Arabia???s very first ethylene. The Sadaf complex, which is covering a 460-acre site in the Industrial City of Jubail, contains six-world scale petrochemical plants with a total average output of more than 4 million metric tons per year of various chemicals. With the successful startup of all its expansion projects in 1997, Sadaf again embarked on a new expansion program involving the improvement of its existing Styrene Plant I, construction of a new Styrene Unit (Styrene Plant II), and construction of two Cogeneration Units. On completion of the expansion projects, Sadaf is expected to produce 4,710 million metric tons per year of various chemicals placing the company at the forefront of the Kingdom???s petrochemical industry. These expansion projects and other undertakings have given new impetus to the continuing growth of Sadaf, the largest in the Middle East. The Saudi Petrochemical Company produces the following products with their capacities in Metric Tons Per Annum (MTPA): ethylene, 1.1 million mt/pa; crude industrial ethanol (CIE), 300,000 mt/pa; ethylene dichloride (EDC), 840,000 mt/pa; styrene 1.1 million mt/pa; caustic soda, 670,000 mt/pa; and methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), 700,000 mt/pa; Co-generation (250,000 MW : IPP) Sadaf high-quality products are certified under the ISO-9001 Certification. For feedstock, Sadaf utilizes ethane, benzene, methane, butane, and salt brine. After further processing, these products reach consumers as end-use items such as auto parts, home appliances parts, detergents, tires and other rubber-based products as well as personal care products among others. Sadaf???s commitment to safety, environmental protection, responsiveness to the needs of all its customers and its determination to continuously develop a professional, competent and highly trained workforce is embeded in its corporate mission. Furthermore, in support to the Kingdom???s industrial development program and Saudization objectives, greater emphasis is placed on developing Saudi nationals to assume productive roles at all levels of the company???s corporate structure. At present, the total manpower of Sadaf is almost 800 employees, a large percentage of which are Saudi citizens. To ensure that Sadaf remains strong and competitive in the world petrochemical market, the senior management has implemented the Total Quality Management (TQM) process. The core theme of Sadaf???s TQM process is to satisfy the customers??? expectations by providing first class petrochemical products.
